Of this album, devoted to the works of Nicolas Vallet, CD 1 comprises all compositions from his Een en twintich Psalmen Davids (21 psalms of David), supplemented with eight preludes from Regia Pietas. CD 2 is a selection of music for lute solo from Secretum Musarum and all compositions for lute quartet.
This recording covers, for the first time, the complete scope of Vallet's works, both sacred and secular. The Genevan psalm melodies serve as a cantus firmus to imaginative and virtuoso polyphonic lute accompaniment. The purely instrumental second CD provides a range of charming arrangements of popular tunes and dances for solo lute as well as several church anthems. It also includes Vallet's famous works for lute quartet, rendering a catching taste of early 17th-century entertainment in Amsterdam.
Performing musicians: Tineke Roseboom (soprano), Kaspar Kröner (alto), Harry van Berne (tenor), Jasper Schweppe (baritone), Jelle Draijer (bass).
Accompaniments and lute solos: Willem Mook.
Nicolaes Vallet Lute Quartet: Israel Golani (treble lute), René Genis (alto lute), Arjen Verhagen (tenor lute), Willem Mook (bass lute).
